Episode 45 "You can't build a show all at once, yo Episode 45
"You can't build a show all at once, you have to do it in layers."
@_avamingo and @royerbockus are actors at @osfashland Oregon Shakespeare Festival who describe building a musical like making a lasagna — layer by layer, trusting the process even when you can't see the whole yet. This week on Full Expression, we go behind the scenes at the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, one of the longest running and most highly regarded repertory theaters in America.

Recent protests in Valencia got me thinking about the many educators who shaped my life.

This month more than 35,000 people marched in support of more funding for public education and higher teacher salaries in both the city and province of Valencia. and the protests are ongoing. It’s an all too common problem with a kind of obvious solution. Make public education a priority all over the world.

I took some time on this week’s Substack to reflect on the many great teachers I’ve had the privilege of studying with. Spanish is something I studied from junior high through college and I’m especially grateful for the modern language program at Allegheny College which serves me to this day.

"Somehow I grew up thinking that the people who write books or record music or make works of art belong to a secret society of singularly talented magic wand wavers. When in fact, these are inter-related disciplines with semantics and mathematics and historical references all their own."

Beautifully Imperfect Repeatability

“I have a soft spot for factories where craft meets industrial production.”

This week’s Substack and podcast features the story of @heathceramics, an iconic California ceramics brand whose founder, Edith Heath, pioneered timeless mid-century modern design between 1947 and the early 2000s. This interview with Heath’s current owners, Cathy Bailey and Robin Petravich, explores the history, design philosophy and legacy of this northern California brand. We spoke about the art of everyday objects and how the blend of small scale, hand crafted industrial production meets modern challenges—economically, environmentally and creatively.

“There is something about an old brick factory with glass paned windows, wood floors and beams, freight elevators, the smell of paint and sawdust and craftspeople engrossed at their stations that speaks to me."

"When you're working with color, you always have to have this kind of openness to what the chemistry might bring out."
At @heathceramics, color isn't something you control — it's something you discover. You can't just mix and match. You add ingredients, chemistry takes over, and a new material emerges. That openness is where the creativity lives.

New substack Undamming the Klamath I drove east ac New substack
Undamming the Klamath
I drove east across the Coast Range, north through the Sacramento Valley, past Mt. Shasta, through a hailstorm, into Oregon.
Six hours to sit down with Amy Bowers Cordalis — Yurok lawyer, UNEP Champion of the World, and author of The Water Remembers.
Her family fought for generations to restore the Klamath River. Against Warren Buffet. Against Congress. Against 100 years of broken treaties.
"If the Klamath salmon die," she writes, "so will the Yurok people. There will be no purpose for us on Earth."
Amy is a force for change. Her story must be heard.
